Congratulations to Karolin who wins the JUST FOR FUN “competition” with this playful winter shot. Perfect timing!

Lately I’ve been seeing a saying, “We really don’t deserve dogs.”  The saying is usually accompanied by a video, or photo, of a dog doing something “human,” or otherwise displaying traits or behaviors that humans should display or do more often.  It’s kind of a developing social media meme, I guess.

Most dog lovers could readily agree with this saying, I think, because dogs often pleasantly surprise us with traits that the best people have.  They are empathetic and loyal.  They love us unconditionally, even when we might not be at our best. They can teach us a lot if we take the time to watch and listen.

One of these good things I admire about dogs is their ability to “live in the moment.”  They seize every opportunity to be curious. To find that sunny spot to take a nap in.  To come to us for a belly scratch if they sense we are receptive, and even if we may not be receptive:  You never know, it might happen if you ask and turn on some charm.

Karolin’s photo found one of these moments, and it is perfectly timed at the peak of action to tell the story.

You know, when you are walking in the woods and you see a tree root sticking out of the ground, you just have to play with it.  If you are a dog, or a kid perhaps, you know deep down that you should never pass up the opportunity to have a little fun if the world presents it to you.

We may not deserve dogs, but fortunately they exist to teach us and remind us to be our best selves.  To live in the moment and take that opportunity, if only just for fun. Especially just for fun!
